The current medical landscape continues to evolved adapt to our ever changing clinical environment. The modernization of medicine has seen vanishing paper charts, the ever-expanding electronic health record and technology being at the center of ongoing developments. Medicine practices have evolved as the development of evidence-based recommendations and guidelines have been deployed. As we continue to evolve with the medical system at hand, we see growing collections of data points and information related to patient care. Currently, we use multiple calculators—algorithms, if you will—to better help us manage the likelihood of morbidity and mortality. In related fields (e.g., high performance sports), we see the use of big data in efforts directed primarily at injury prevention. We will evaluate if there is place for big data in clinical medicine and if so how do we ensure success of machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
Learning Objectives:
Appreciate the current trends in algorithmic medicine application
Understand that clinical variation is not evidence based practice
Allow yourself to see the application of machine learning and AI tool developments
