Medicare annual wellness visits offer geriatric patients and their families or caregivers the opportunity to take an active and preventive role in the management of their health. With a focus on prevention and the assessment of geriatric-specific issues such as functional status, depression, cognition, medication utilization and advance care planning, this unfortunately under-utilized service often provides physicians the ability to construct a patient-centered healthcare plan. These visits may be offered to patients in the extended care setting and most commonly in the ambulatory setting.
Learning Objectives:
Describe types of preventive services now available to Medicare beneficiaries since ACA implementation
Describe components of each wellness visit and differentiate requirements by visit
Develop strategies to implement making long-term care facilities more amenable to performing Medicare preventive services
Identify proper methods for billing and coding Medicare preventive services
