Hypertension is a major contributing factor for the most common cause of death and for the fifth leading cause of death in the United States—coronary artery disease and stroke, respectively. There is ongoing research on bettering treatment plans to control hypertension and lowering these risks. This lecture is meant to familiarize everyone with up-to-date literature on treatments of hypertension in general and special populations. By the end of the lecture, you should be able to perform this and provide care to your patients to keep them safe and save them money.

Learning Objectives:
Diagnose and formulate treatment plans for hypertension, per guidelines from the JNC 8 or American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association for general population and special populations
Discuss non-pharmacologic means of lowering their blood pressure with patients
Refer patients to the emergency department appropriately for hypertension
