This session will focus on the recognition that it may not always be obvious that a patient under care is a veteran and that there is no "one size fits all" profile of veteran mental health needs. Participants will learn how to appropriately and sensitively screen for veteran-specific mental health needs. This will be followed by a discussion about the help that can be provided within the primary care setting including prescribing advice for such in-house assistance. The session will close by a discussion of resources to consider when outside referral is appropriate.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to recognize that veterans have varying demographic profiles and that there is no "one size fits all" profile of a veteran.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to ask appropriate screening questions to assess the presence of mental health needs of veteran patients.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to distinguish between mental health needs that can be addressed in the primary care setting and those that call for referral elsewhere.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to give appropriate advice regarding resources available for addressing veteran mental health needs.
