As the 2024-2025 year comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey I've had on the National Student Executive Board (NSEB). Serving as your President has been an utmost rewarding experience, and it's been a privilege to lead this board. Together with the board, we all aimed to work on supporting us as students and all of our student chapters across the country.

Throughout this year, we’ve been able to accomplish a lot together, especially working on meaningful initiatives that address the needs of our student body. We hope this will help build a stronger, more connected community. Here are a few highlights of what we’ve achieved.

Collaborating on Student Involvement and Chapter Engagement

Working alongside the Public Relations Committee, the NSEB contributed multiple podcasts to the DO.fm Student Podcast Channel. This should help in increasing our involvement as students and highlighting the importance of osteopathic family medicine. Additionally, we worked closely with our Membership Recruitment Committee to distribute membership toolkits to all our student chapters, ensuring they had the resources to engage new members. We also took steps to assess the barriers that prevent us students from participating in the ACOFP national convention, helping to identify ways to make this valuable experience more accessible to everyone.

Advocating for What Matters Most to Students

One of the things I’m most proud of this year is our work with the student Resolutions Committee. We successfully submitted three resolutions on issues that directly affect our members, including supporting physician use and education of food prescriptions, reducing financial burden, and addressing COMLEX discrimination in Family Medicine. These resolutions will be presented at the Congress of Delegates, ensuring that our voices are heard on a national level and that these critical issues are being addressed in the broader conversation about family medicine.

Connecting with the Resident Council

I am also proud to say we continue to ensure that students have the resources and information they need to make informed decisions about residency. We worked closely with the Resident Council through our quarterly roundtables and will continue to have them as speakers at our previous and upcoming conventions. We hope this will continue to provide valuable insights into family medicine and residency programs, helping us students navigate this important next step in our careers.

Highlighting the Faces of Family Medicine

We continued to spotlight the different backgrounds and individuals within family medicine. Through our quarterly digital interviews, we spoke with ACOFP leaders, including chairs of Family Medicine, deans, and ACOFP Board members. These conversations, shared through our podcasts, have provided unique perspectives on the field and have underscored how much family medicine continues to evolve as a specialty.

Building Resources for Student Chapter Presidents

A major accomplishment has been the creation of an online resource area for student chapter presidents. This is a project we’ve been working on with ACOFP staff, and it’s currently in progress and will soon be released. This website will be a key resource for student chapters, especially presidents, providing them with the necessary tools, deadlines, and information to help them succeed.

The progress we've made this year wouldn't have been possible without the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of all of you—whether you were actively involved on committees, leading chapters, or engaging in our initiatives. Thank you. I am truly proud of what we've accomplished together, and I’m excited to see the ongoing impact of these efforts.

It has been an honor to serve as your President, and I look forward to seeing the continued success of us all. Thank you all for the opportunity to lead and for the support you’ve shown me and the NSEB this year. Let’s never stop striving to be great together and stay DO strong.

Osteopathically Yours,

George Tong Yang, OMS-IV, MPH
