COM: Kansas City University Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, MO
Residency:
Mizzou Family Medicine in Columbia, MO

Why did you choose this residency program?

I chose MU Family Medicine for several reasons. As a Mizzou undergraduate, I had always heard exceptional things about the program. During my sub-internship at MU, I spent a month working in both the outpatient clinic and on the inpatient service, and I truly fell in love with the program—particularly the supportive and inspiring faculty and residents. I'm also interested in pursuing a sports medicine fellowship, and MU stood out because it offers that opportunity along with strong exposure to sports medicine throughout residency.

Why did you choose family medicine?

I chose family medicine because I wanted a career that allowed me to take care of people of all ages and provide a full scope of practice to patients and their families. I really enjoy the variety of primary care and preventing chronic disease.

What is a typical day like in your life as a resident?

My days as a resident are quite busy and vary greatly based on what rotation I am on. Usually, I start my day with coffee and walk with my dog, Jingles. Then I head to work either in my personal clinic seeing patients or rounding in the hospital on inpatient service. After a long day of work, I like to unwind by staying physically active, cooking dinner with my fiancé Brooke, and watching a new TV show or movie.

What do you like to do in your time outside of residency?

I enjoy playing guitar, golf, water skiing, and watching all kinds of sports.

Why did you volunteer to join the Resident Council?

I volunteered for Resident Council because I enjoy leadership and collaboration with other DOs. I want to advocate for osteopathic medicine and set an example for current and future osteopathic physicians.

What is your advice to students?

My best advice is to advocate for yourself and your time in residency and beyond. Do not give up your outside interests and things that make you happy in residency and in your life as a physician.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a physician?

I realized I wanted to be a physician after working with an orthopedic surgeon in Kansas City as a senior in high school. I loved seeing him interact with his patients and advocate for them to get the best outcomes possible.
