This lecture provides an interactive discussion on the moral dilemmas within family practice and beyond. In the United States, the principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence and justice dictate the duties physicians owe to patients. This session will comprise a case-based discussion of the myriads of moral quandary that physicians encounter in the face of competing and conflicting ethical principles. How can physicians—as moral agents—make the right decisions in a moral dilemma within the laws that govern them?

Learning Objectives:
Identify moral dilemmas when they occur in daily practice
Demonstrate the ability to propose viable options when ethical principles conflict
Describe the consequences of unresolved moral dilemmas
