James Casey Garvin, DO
REGION 2
Resident Council
Hey everyone, I’m Casey and I am one of your region two representatives. I am a second-year resident with Access Health, a community-based Family Medicine residency program located in Beckley, West Virginia. My primary focus while I am your representative is to serve as a liaison for your input and to enhance the resident influence within the ACOFP. I am proud to have been selected to serve the residents of this region and will assist with whatever concerns or suggestions you may have. I am always available and will work my hardest to accurately represent you. If you are ever in WV or surrounding area and want to hang out, send me a message and we can go whitewater rafting, backpacking, shred some snow or find something else fun to do!
Why did you choose FM?
The relationships and the role I can have in my community. Going into 4th year of medical school, I wanted to do anesthesia. Anesthesiologists are at their best when a patient doesn’t remember them. That is not the case with Family Medicine. The FM doctors in my hometown are known to be helpful, and people go to them with problems of all sorts. That’s why I got into medicine, to help people. Helping people is the best part of medicine and family medicine physicians are able to help with all sorts of problems because of their relationships with patients.
What program?
I chose to do my residency at AccessHealth Teaching Health Center in Beckley, WV. AccessHealth is a FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) that focuses on providing care for those most in need. When I found out I could work for a company that shared my views, it was an easy decision. Teaching Health Centers are a unique subset of residencies that focus on teaching physicians to work in rural and underserved areas. A THC was the best landing spot for my interests and future goals.
Do you have any particular interests within FM?
Honestly, no. The beauty of Family Medicine is that you can do whatever you want. It’s possible to do a little of everything with FM. I have never been one that is able to stick with just one job so that is why FM was perfect.
