Fracture of Scaphoid Bone Difficult Diagnosis to Make
In the review article, The Value of Snuffbox Tenderness: A Sign of Things to Come, published in the May/June 2019 issue of Osteopathic Family Physician, the authors review a case report of a 21-year-old male who presents to the emergency department complaining of increasing left wrist pain at the base of the thumb. The initial exam reveals snuffbox tenderness while the wrist was in ulnar deviation. Though this type of fracture is common, it is not unusual for a scaphoid fracture to go undiagnosed. The authors propose that this is most likely because of nonspecific symptoms presented by the patient and often limited or no evidence of a fracture on the initial plain film radiographs.
