ACOFP Student Membership
Joining ACOFP connects students to a nationwide network of osteopathic students, residents and physicians who share a focus on family practice. Membership is free for students registered at Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. ACOFP provides a number of individual growth opportunities for osteopathic students.

The Student Association of the ACOFP's national student officers for 2010-2011 are:

ACOFP provides a number of vehicles for students to research for and select the ideal residency program. ACOFP’s online Residency Program Directory allows students to search by criteria, then provides the details on the locations, scope of training, salaries, benefits, contact information, and additional information for more than 100 osteopathic and dually-accredited family practice residency programs throughout the country. Contact information is given for Resident Ambassadors who will provide information about their Residency Programs.

Students get an opportunity to meet with directors and residents in person at the ACOFP Annual Convention Residency Fair. Many of the 150 AOA-accredited residency programs are represented.

Annually, ACOFP and its Osteopathic Clinical Research Committee ask Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Students, Family Practice Residents and Faculty Members to participate in the Poster Presentations during the ACOFP Annual Convention & Exhibition.

The ACOFP Public Health and Wellness Committee presents the annual Namey/Burnett Preventive Medicine Writing Award competition to honor the best preventive medicine papers submitted by Osteopathic medical students, interns or residents and fellows.

The First Prize winner will receive $500 award, plaque of recognition, round trip airfare to the ACOFP Annual Convention, three nights lodging at the Convention Headquarters Hotel, and the winner also will present their paper as part of the Committee Lecture. The Second and Third Prize winners will receive $250 award, and a plaque of recognition.

Build your leadership skills by participating and running for office in the ACOFP student chapter on your campus. Contact your Student Chapter Officers for more information. Or serve as the student academic member pdf on the National ACOFP Board of Governors.

Student members of ACOFP may also get involved by serving on the ACOFP National Student Board. Nominations for the 2011-2012 National Student Association of the ACOFP Executive Board of Officers are now open. Elections will be held during the ACOFP Annual Convention.

How do you become a member of the ACOFP Executive Board of Officers?

  1. Determine if you meet the criteria for the position you desire.
  2. Submit a letter of intent and CV to Tobi Kelmer by February 25, 2011.
  3. Candidates have the opportunity to speak about their qualifications for office and hand out copies of their letter of intent and CV during the Annual Spring ACOFP Convention.
2010 ACOFP Student Chapter Awards

The National Student Executive Board has the honor of selecting outstanding chapters to receive awards and scholarships each year at the ACOFP Convention. These student chapters are recognized based on their activities and events planned, following specific criteria for each award. Listed below are the winners of the 2010 ACOFP Student Chapter Awards. Congratulations to all, and good luck for the upcoming year!

President’s Award:
Pikeville School of Osteopathic Medicine
Chapter President, Tiffany Thompson, OMS II

PCSOM was given this recognition for best demonstrating the goals and spirit of the SAACOFP through their service, activities, and events hosted by and held for their students. They conducted various medical service projects, such as setting up rural health clinics and donating sunscreen at local pools, and participated in many community projects, including Relay for Life, Pike County Clean up, and Habitat for Humanity, just to name a few. The school’s SAACOFP planned monthly programs with guest speakers to educate members about different aspects of osteopathic family medicine, and worked to recruit and retain a high percentage of members in all classes.

A.T. Still Award:
Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Chapter President, Hope Vermaire, OMS II

MSUCOM did an extraordinary job of integrating Osteopathic Principles and Practice into their family medicine programming. They participated in political activities, such as the MOA Capital Hill House Call and lobbying to state and national legislators, as well as made huge efforts in osteopathic advocacy through presentations during the MSUCOM osteopathic open house. Their SAACOFP also hosted speakers to talk about the Patient Centered Medical Home and it’s relation to family medicine and osteopathy.

Humanitarian Award:

Chapter President, Chelsey Fields, OMS II

DMU-COM participated in a wide variety of humanitarian events within their school, community, and beyond, serving as an advocate for the osteopathic profession. They participated in health fairs, conducted a bone marrow drive and held numerous events at the Wesley Acres Adult Daycare Center, such as a Christmas party and ice cream socials. The student members of their SAACOFP stayed very active in their community through many service projects and provided great representation of their school and organization.

Communication Award:

TUNCOM-NV implemented a stellar newsletter to keep all their students, faculty, staff and SAACOFP informed, as well as utilized Facebook to create an avenue of communication between all members in an organized and timely fashion. By utilizing the information provided, students were always up to date about all events and activities, and given multiple resources on osteopathic family medicine at their fingertips.

OSU-COM was voted to receive this award by chapter leaders from each school at the 2010 ACOFP Convention based on their outstanding annual report presentation. SAACOFP members were impressed with the activities and events put on by the OSU-COM organization and their creative way of presenting their accomplishments to the audience.
