Resources for Effective Health Care
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) Effective Health Care Program provides osteopathic physicians and patients with comprehensive reviews on the effectiveness and risks for a number of medical conditions. Since 2005, AHRQ has published high-quality reviews on diabetes; digestive system conditions; heart and blood vessel conditions; mental health conditions; muscle, bone, and joint conditions; and some cancers. Summary guides and research reviews for these medical conditions and others are available to physicians and patients free of charge.
FDA Alert - Withdrawal of Raptiva
Genentech and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified health care professionals of the voluntary, phased withdrawal of Raptiva, a medication for treatment of psoriasis, from the U.S. market due to a potential risk to patients of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). By June 8, 2009, Raptiva will no longer be available in the United States. Prescribers are being asked not to initiate Raptiva treatment for any new patients. Prescribers should immediately begin discussing with patients currently using Raptiva how to transition to alternative therapies.
Back to Campus
VCOM takes pride in its international efforts, which begin during the first and second years of training. Short term mission trips over academic breaks provide students with a foundation to consider one month rotations during the 3rd and 4th years. The VCOM clinics and rotation sites are located in the Dominican Republic and the two Central American countries of Honduras and El Salvador. While doing one month rotations in Underserved Care at one of these rotation sites, students decide if they have interest in pursuing the unique dual DO/PhD degree in Global Health offered in partnership with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The ACOFP Student Chapter united with the VCOM student chapter of ACOEP to embark on a mission trip to Honduras, Central America from November 21-November 28, 2008.
