Q&A with the 2007-2008 Student President: Lauren Strohm, OMS - II @ PCOM

Q: Why do you want to serve as Student President?
A: As winter approached and I was planning the ACOFP meeting at PCOM to promote the Convention, I realized I was not ready to give up my ACOFP leadership post. I felt there was still more that I could do to highlight our wonderful, noble profession. I wanted to inspire my fellow students – not just those at PCOM – to care about the future of Osteopathic Family Medicine. The best way I knew how to share my ambition and drive with the entire organization was to serve on the National Student Executive Board.

Q: What do you want to get out of being Student President?
A:  My sincerest hope is that I learn as much as possible about the governance of ACOFP; to take advantage of the outstanding networking opportunities provided to students; and to continue to build lifelong friendships with osteopathic colleagues.

Q.  What initiatives are you planning to implement/develop during your presidential tenure?
A: The top priority for me and the other amazing members of the National Student Board is to inspire the same passion for Osteopathic Family Medicine within our peers as we have within ourselves. We also have plans to educate our members on the many different avenues a family physician can choose to take when going into practice; to inform our members about a variety of practical OMT techniques; and to alert our members to the range of physician loan forgiveness programs offered on both the national and local levels. It is very important to us that our peers understand it is indeed possible for us to pay back our student loans and make a comfortable living as family physicians.

Q: As President of PCOM, your membership doubled…how can you duplicate this success with the ACOFP student membership?
A: In order to achieve our goal of 100% membership I am willing to work closely with any student chapter desiring my assistance. The most important thing any chapter can do to boost their membership is to be enthusiastic…when students see other students with a passion for something, it gets their attention! I would also suggest that they try some of the tactics I implemented last year at PCOM – like raffles and having those not interested in family medicine challenge me to change their minds.
