Residency Program & Resident Recruiter of the Month
NSUCOM/North Broward Hospital
Location: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Setting: Urban
Resident Recruiter: Tiffany Ellis-Osterhaven, DO Congratulations to Dr. Osterhaven on her recent marriage.
Program Description:
The guiding principle of the NBHD/NSUCOM Family Medicine residency is that education is the key to a successful medical practice in the 21st century. Education takes precedence over service.
Resident Recruiter:
Tiffany Ellis-Osterhaven, DO
Q1: When you recommend your program to prospective medical students, what is the foundation of your message?
A1: I would recommend our resident program for several reasons. The Family Medicine program at BGMC provides an opportunity to see a great deal of pathology, perhaps more than at any other program in south Florida. Residents at Broward General will provide care for a wide variety of patients from several cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. In saying this, residents at BGMC have a very autonomous position during most of their in house and clinic rotations. This enables residents to take great responsibility for their patients, have continuity of care and to gain self-confidence in their abilities while always having back up of attending physicians and senior residents. The clinic experience is at the Ziff Clinic at NSU that is run by the attendings at NSU. Our clinic experience is continuous throughout all of our rotations to provide good follow up and continuity for not only our patients but also for us.
Q2: What advice would you give to prospective medical students trying to choose the best residency program for themselves?
A2. Prospective medical students should consider what specialty of medicine most suits them. Primary care vs. specialty? Do they want to focus in an outpatient setting or act more as a hospitalist? Location is also an important factor in choosing a residency. If you are lucky enough to have a choice in this matter it can help to be in a location where you will be satisfied with your life and activities outside of the hospital as well as when working. The best people to ask are the other residents at the programs that you are considering.
Resident Recruiter: Tiffany Ellis-Osterhaven, DO is available to answer your questions via e-mail at tellisdo@gmail.com
