Residents Revel in Education and Fun During ACOFP Convention

Residents earned prizes, improved medical skills (and their golf swing) plus attended numerous education opportunities during the 44th Annual ACOFP Convention & Exhibition in Kissimmee, Florida.  The Business of Medicine for Residents and Young Physicians lecture series presented seven key lectures focusing on skill improvement (such as OMM demonstrations), how to increase reimbursement, how to choose a practice site, and how to negotiate a contract.

When the residents weren’t expanding their knowledge there was plenty of fun to be had at the Young Physicians Welcome Reception for residents and at the Auxiliary Golf Outing, where residents played a round of golf on their sponsor.

Residents awarded prizes in annual Namey/Burnett Preventive Medicine Writing Competition awarded in Kissimmee, Florida.
Adrian T. Harvey, DO, a resident at BroMenn Regional Center, Normal, Illinois was awarded First Prize for his submission tot the Namey/Burnett Preventive Medicine Writing competition titled Weight Loss for Life.

The competition honors the best preventive medicine papers submitted by osteopathic medical students, interns and residents.

The competition’s Second Prize was awarded to Christine T. Geronimo, DO, a resident at the Department of Family Practice. Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, New York, for her submission titled The Use of Osteopathic Manipulation in the Prevention of Otitis Media.

Q&A with New Resident Board Member

Rebeccah R. Rodriguez, DO rrodriguez@atsu.edu
KCOM/John C. Lincoln Health Network

Q. Why do you want to serve on this board at this time?
A. The ACOFP Resident Board of Governors position has been a dream of mine since I began medical school.  I have had strong mentors (colleagues and physicians) at KCOM, Missouri ACOFP and Arizona ACOFP that have made a lifelong impression about being passionate and active within the osteopathic profession.  At this time, I feel that I have had many opportunities to serve within “The Family” and learn about the ACOFP goals and governing structure.  I am at a point in my training that allows me to be right in the center of gaining knowledge from the student, resident and practicing physicians in order to achieve the goals of the ACOFP Board and personal goals for resident physicians.

Q. What do you expect to contribute to ACOFP and the residents as a member of the Board?
A.  I will contribute past experience within the organization, hard work to achieve this year’s goals of the ACOFP Board and osteopathic residents, a listening ear for the residents to express their ideas and concerns, a determined attitude to improve our current residencies, and commitment to the osteopathic Family Medicine Community.

Q. What do you want to get out of being on the board?
A. I would like to gain more knowledge from “The Pioneers” of the organization on current medical issues that will affect me in the future, learn how to lobby to politicians and within the AOA, learn about the criteria that the ACOFP uses for one to be an ACOFP Fellow and a practicing physician on the Board of Governors (as this would be two of my future goals), and build lifelong relationships with the physicians I have looked up to since I began medical school.

Q.What do you want to achieve for residents during your time on the board?
A. Working with the ACOFP Board, I hope to accomplish the objectives below:

  1. Improve the quality of current osteopathic Family Medicine Residencies by working with the ACOFP Board to strengthening standards within all programs and create continuity amongst all osteopathic family medicine residency programs.

  2. Boost the morale and change osteopathic medical students’ perception of Family Medicine using the Strongest Link Residents, ACOFP Board, and Student ACOFP Board of Governors Member-Sara James.  I hope to re-inspire our students to choose Osteopathic Family Medicine programs.

  3. Work in conjunction with the ACOFP Residents Committee to establish an honorable perception of the Strongest Link Resident at each program and create responsibilities for this position, as it is a significant contribution that Strongest Link Residents are making to both the osteopathic medical students and their residency programs.

  4. Help osteopathic residents who have chosen allopathic residencies to get back into “The Family.”  This will be accomplished by working with the AOA, ACOFP Board, and Strongest Link Residents to help make the process easier and clearer.
