Drug Rumors Vs. Truth (from the Prescriber's Letter)

RUMOR: The new Dilantin 100 mg capsules aren't the same as the original Dilantin Kapseals.

TRUTH: Pfizer stopped making the original Dilantin Kapseals 100 mg when they updated their manufacturing process. The ingredients inside the new capsules are exactly the same...just the capsule shell has changed.

This explains the new look...but why the new name and NDC?

The FDA considers a drug to be a new product whenever there is a manufacturing change. Possible differences in mixer efficiency, drying materials, or even humidity uptake during production can affect quality or effectiveness of a product.

This is why generics that contain the same ingredients and dosage form still have to go under bioequivalency studies.

Reassure patients that the new Dilantin capsules are bioequivalent to the old Kapseals...and therefore interchangeable. But alert them to the new appearance to avoid unnecessary alarm.

ACOFP Board Works to Enhance Residencies

The ACOFP Board of Governors met in late January at the ACOFP headquarters in chilly Arlington Heights, Illinois.  Key discussion topics included ways to expand residencies through Community Health Centers and the Veterans Administration, expansion of residency curriculum to include special emphasis training tracks for Hospital Medicine and for Dermatology, marketing our residencies to students, consideration of a public relations campaign, and helping members make the transition to electronic medical records and the new “medical home” model of family practice.
