Representation at AACOM/AODME Meeting
Tuesday through Saturday I will be at the AACOM/AODME annual meeting in St. Louis as these two organizations of educators hold a joint meeting dedicated largely to the challenges the osteopathic profession faces in the realm of GME. Building on the results of the OME-II Summit that recommended an expanding emphasis on primary care for the future of the profession, the meeting will focus on ways to improve the quality and competitiveness of our GME programs, and on increasing the number and expanding the distribution of osteopathic GME.

The initiatives that ACOFP’s Committee on Evaluation and Education developed in sponsorship of resident training by organizations other than hospitals, new programs for family medicine, additional funding for osteopathic family medicine resident training will be discussed as well as a mechanism to increase the faculty development needed to provide quality osteopathic teachers and role models for our students.

As Your Parents Would Say, Get Outside and Play!
Congratulations to all those osteopathic physicians who are basketball fans in Tennessee, Kansas and California on their team’s success at the big dance. The men’s championship trophy rests comfortably in the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks and the women’s champion will be determined tonight between the Lady Volunteers and the Cardinal of Stanford.

To our student and resident leaders affiliated with DeBusk in Tennessee, KCUMB in Kansas, Touro in San Francisco and Western University COMP in Pomona, I would like to challenge you to set an example of commitment for all our students by dedicating time to your own physical, emotional and spiritual well being. Regular exercise and good nutrition is not only the best way to improve your own health, it provides a positive role model of good health for our patients. It is not always easy to DO as YOU say, but it is more effective than WHAT you say when motivating your patients.

With basketball season ending and baseball beginning, the outdoors beckons each of us with a plethora of opportunities for renewal and excitement as we exercise our emotions, our senses and our bodies walking, running, swimming, rowing or bicycling outside of our homes and offices.

Online CME Available Through ACOFP
ACOFP has a new online education course available for members “Getting a Leg Up on Cardiovascular Disease”. This course offers 2 Category 1-B AOA Credits. It provides physicians information on the risks posed by atherothrombosis and the evidence-based measures that can be taken to improve the recognition and treatment of patients with PAD and post ACS/stroke so as to reduce future MI and stroke. Register for it today!

ACOFP’s Fit for Life
Protect yourself from the sun! Summer is coming and it is a great time to have fun outdoors. It's also a time to take precautions to avoid sunburns, which can increase your risk of skin cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.

Back to Campus - Bowling for Canned Goods
The Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center Student Chapter of the ACOFP, winner of this year’s SAACOFP President’s Award, along with the Sports Medicine Club on campus co-sponsored a food drive to raise canned goods and money for the Food Band of Iowa. Students donated 5 canned goods or $5. The DMU ACOFP student chapter and Sports Medicine Club provided free bowling at a local bowling alley, pizza, and a beverage for the night for each student who donated.

Make your opinions known! Send an email to me and ACOFP. Share your thoughts, make comments, and tell us what you have been doing in regards to osteopathic family medicine.
