ACOFP Committee Work Addressing Resident Matches
A record 28,737 applicants, the largest ever, including a historically high 15,242 U.S. medical school seniors, vied for one of the 22,240 first year residency positions this year through the National Resident Matching Program and 84.6 percent of U.S. seniors obtained one of their top three program choices.

These numbers magnify the requirement for the osteopathic profession, including ACOFP to continue to develop new, innovative programs in areas and locations of interest for our graduates to ensure that as the numbers of applicants grow and that quality osteopathic GME is available for all of our graduates from the 28 colleges and campuses across the country.

ACOFP’s Committee on Evaluation & Education is working to develop new programs including ones with areas of special emphasis and new CAQ’s to meet the needs and desires of our students and residents. It also is working to reform current resident standards to meet the needs of tomorrow’s physicians. ACOFP is committed to ensure that osteopathic family physician residencies will be competitive and quality programs, that they will maintain their traditional standards of excellence for education and service to underserved populations and that they will lead the way in innovative education.

The Patient Centered Medical Home: Infrastructure
Join the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) and the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC) for the second in a series of web seminars on the patient centered medical home concept and the value it brings to primary care. The seminar will take place Wednesday, April 2, 2008 from noon to 1:30 pm Easter Daylight Time. This program will focus state strategies for supporting practices in fulfilling their role as a medical home.

Get the Handouts from the 2008 Convention Today!
In solidarity with Colorado's reputation as one of the "greenest" states in the country, ACOFP has posted the handouts from its 2008 Annual Convention on the website for those of you who want copies or missed these high quality presentations. Thanks for helping us be more environmentally friendly.

ACOFP’s Fit for Life
Did anyone have jet lag when they got back from Convention? Why is it that the first thing you want on your trip home is a nap? Speeding across time zones disrupts your circadian rhythms, resulting in outright exhaustion and, paradoxically, trouble zonking out (or staying that way). Caffeine is a popular and effective perk up, but drinking it after 4 pm local time could actually hinder your sleep. Give these remedies from Prevention Magazine a try to send fatigue packing.

Make your opinions known! Send an email to me and ACOFP. Share your thoughts, make comments, and tell us what you have been doing in regards to osteopathic family medicine.
