News From the ACOFP Convention
Thanks to all of you who joined us for the 45th Annual Convention & Exhibition in Denver last week. The week was marked by not only great educational events, but also by the renewal of professional commitments and wonderful fellowship shared with family, friends and colleagues.
ACOFP and AOA Speak to Colorado Judiciary Committee
On March 12, AOA President, Dr. Peter Ajluni and I testified before the Colorado House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. We spoke against Colorado Senate Bill 164 that would raise medical liability caps on non-economic damages if enacted. I discussed the negative effects this action would have on the physician workforce in Colorado. It would further be a detriment to recruiting students to the incoming classes at Colorado Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.
Special Recognitions
Dr. Alan Brewer recognition as the Osteopathic Physician of the Year was the highlight of the banquet on Saturday night and as he expressed, marked one of the crowning achievements of a distinguished career in osteopathic medicine.
Special congratulations are sent along to Dr. Wilbur Hill for receiving the Lifetime Achievement recognition and Dr. Kelly Ward for her recognition as the Young Osteopathic Physician of the Year. Both are richly deserved.
A special thanks is extended to Dr. Glenn Miller and his wife Lynne who marked the end of 13 years of service to the ACOFP Board of Governors, but certainly not of service to the profession.
Dr. Rebecca Rodriquez, the resident representative to the Board for 2007 and Student Dr. Sarah James also finished their year of service to the Board of Governors but we are certain that they will return to leadership positions in the future.
Congratulations to Dr. Jan Zieren who was elevated to President-elect of the ACOFP, Dr. Kenneth Heiles who was elected as Vice President and Dr. George Sawabini who was reelected to Secretary-Treasurer. They were installed into office along with Dr. Rodney Wiseman, elected as a Governor, Dr. Mark Sakorski and Dr. Paul Morris who were elected to the office of Speaker and Vice-Speaker of the Congress respectively during the ceremonies on Wednesday.
ACOFP’s Fit for Life
CNN’s Accent Health says “Watch your portion sizes.”
Refresh Your OMT with Somatic Dysfunction in Osteopathic Family Medicine
ACOFP’s Somatic Dysfunction in Osteopathic Family Medicine, a textbook developed by the Committee on Osteopathic Principles and Practice and published by Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins is a great way to update your osteopathic diagnostic and treatment skills. The textbook focuses on the evaluation of the patient that presents with somatic dysfunction or the functional impairment of the musculoskeletal system, and its related neural and vascular elements in the context of the practice of family medicine.
Back to Campus
Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine ACOFP Student Chapter, Rebecca Fahlgren, President, cosponsored a student event in which their chapter Faculty Advisor, Gautam Desai, DO spoke about the practice and procedures of acupuncture. He explained how acupuncture can be used with OMT to benefit a patient who goes to their Osteopathic Family Physician for common complaints such as back pain, muscle pain & GERD. After his presentation, Dr Desai demonstrated the use of acupuncture on several students and then allowed students the opportunity to learn how to insert acupuncture needles in themselves or other willing students.
