Thank You and Farewell!
This is my final issue of Leading the Osteopathic Way.  If by creating this vehicle, I did nothing but increase communication for the association then it was an utter success. I cannot believe how the year flew by. Thank you so much for reading Leading the Osteopathic Way and I am happy to say that it will continue to be a resource for members as Dr. Ronnie B. Martin becomes President of ACOFP.

FDA Warning on Use of Tamiflu
Roche and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed health care professionals of neuropsychiatric events associated with the use of Tamiflu, in patients with influenza. These symptoms, as described in post marketing reports mostly from Japan, include delirium and abnormal behavior leading to injury, and in some cases resulting in fatal outcomes. These events were reported primarily among pediatric patients and often had an abrupt onset and rapid resolution. Patients with influenza should be closely monitored for signs of abnormal behavior. If neuropsychiatric symptoms occur, the risks and benefits of continuing treatment should be evaluated.

This year’s convention will feature a lecture on Religion, Conscience and Controversial Medical Interventions. The ACOFP Ethics Committee presents this provocative session to examine how individual physicians’ beliefs affect medical decision-making and practice.  The presentation is based upon a survey published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 that correlated physicians' demographic factors, religious affiliation and level of religiosity with responses to a series of questions regarding controversial topics in health care.  This program will utilize audience response system (ARS) technology to quantify the results of ACOFP participants' responses to a questionnaire modeled on the one used in the study.  Following review of the ARS graphic results of audience responses, a panel with expertise in legal and ethical aspects of health care will discuss the findings.  Audience participation in the form of comment, critique, questions and answers will be encouraged.
