Maine’s Dr. William Bergen Receives ACOFP Fellow Award
ACOFP will be conferring the designation of ACOFP Fellow on 21 members in ceremonies at our Annual Convention next month, but one of those members received his Award and plaque earlier this month before his peers at the Maine ACOFP State Society meeting.
William F. Bergen, DO, and his wife were driving from Maine to Florida in March 2007 to attend the ACOFP Convention – after which he would have been qualified for the Fellow designation – but both were seriously injured in an automobile accident on the way to the Convention.
The ACOFP Board voted to confer Fellow status on Dr. Bergen, citing his significant involvement in osteopathic education through the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. We send best wishes to both for continued recovery, and congratulations to William F. Bergen, DO, FACOFP!

This year’s convention will feature a lecture on Emerging Technologies in the Treatment of Pain. The issue of chronic pain is one that faces primary care physicians on a daily basis. Studies indicate that less than half of patients report adequate relief from pain. The use of opiod analgesia is no longer considered controversial, yet many physicians continue to fear that prescribing controlled substances for pain holds the threat of litigation or loss of licensure in the event that the patient is diverting or abusing medications or becomes addicted. This program will answer the many questions and concerns that surround the prescription of strong medications for pain, such as: how can I recognize patients who may be mis-representing their pain or need for medications? How can I avoid the problem of having a patient become addicted to a pain medication? What is the best way to treat real pain in a patient who is known to have a history of drug abuse or addiction? The program format will incorporate case studies with Q and A to enable physicians to test their knowledge of and comfort level for prescribing high potency medications for pain.
