Mixed Results for Family Medicine in Osteopathic Match
One key indicator for the long-term viability of osteopathic family medicine as a profession is the result of the annual AOA Intern/Resident Registration Program – “The Match”.
Results released this week reveal that 244 students matched into 554 available osteopathic family practice positions offered at 162 residency programs. That’s an increase of 54 new residents over 2007 when 188 students matched into 368 available positions offered at 119 programs. In addition, 11 students matched into 20 available residencies offering “plus-one” fellowships for emergency medicine and OMM with the family practice residency.
Those who did not match still can be recruited into unfilled positions, post-match.
Family practice ranked first with 255 students matching to our programs, followed by emergency medicine with 183 and internal medicine with 175.
ACOFP’s Task Force on Maintaining Osteopathic Family Practice Residency Programs will submit its report to the 2008 ACOFP Congress of Delegates meeting in Denver.

Back to Campus
Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Chapter of the ACOFP sponsored a bone marrow drive with the Iowa Marrow Donor Program to recruit students, faculty and people from the community for the bone marrow registry. Under the leadership of chapter president Charleen R. Balcer they helped to sign up 50 people to the registry. The drive was coordinated with the first year immunology course lecture topic of “Transplantation” to provide more information to students prior to the drive. A bone marrow transplant patient will speak about her experiences to the students this spring.
