ACOFP Board Works to Enhance Residencies
The ACOFP Board of Governors met last weekend at our headquarters in chilly Arlington Heights, Illinois. Key discussion topics included ways to expand residencies through Community Health Centers and the Veterans Administration, expansion of residency curriculum to include special emphasis training tracks for Hospital Medicine and for Dermatology, marketing our residencies to students, consideration of a public relations campaign, and helping members make the transition to electronic medical records and the new “medical home” model of family practice.
Residency Program Oversight
The ACOFP Committee on Education & Evaluation also met to review and approve residency program inspections, approve residents for training complete status, update several components of the Basic Standards, plan the 2008 Intensive Update & Board Review course and In-Service Examination, and consider special emphasis training tracks.
Fostering Osteopathic Certification
The ACOFP Membership Committee also convened last weekend, discussing ideas for attracting students to our residencies and residents to ACOFP membership. The ACOFP will ask the AOA to further streamline the process by which osteopathic physicians in allopathic family practice residencies can have their allopathic training approved and ultimately to become AOA certified.
Meeting in Missouri
ACOFP Governor Dr. Paul Martin, from Ohio, traveled to the Missouri ACOFP meeting last weekend, where discussion topics included the ACOFP involvement in the Patient-Centered Primary Care Coalition that is monitoring “medical home” development, osteopathic mentoring, residency program enhancements, and scope of practice.
Congratulations to newly-elected Missouri ACOFP State Society President, John Collins, DO; President-elect Elisa Vineyard, DO; Vice President James Stoneking, DO; Treasurer Wilber Hill, DO, FACOFP, dist; who were inaugurated by visiting ACOFP Board Governor Paul A. Martin, DO, FACOFP at their January meeting. Dr. Martin also presented outgoing president Laura Hempstead with a token of appreciation for her efforts on behalf of MO members during the year.
Resource for Real Time PCR for Influenza
Dave Mason, DO has written to share with us that there is a New Jersey Medical Diagnostic Labs that has already had real time PCR for Influenza A and B as well as many other infectious diseases. He suggests looking at the new NasoSwab. Thanks for the feedback!
Register Today for the 2008 ACOFP Convention!
This year’s convention will feature a lecture on Spirometry Practicum: Case-Based Clinical Applications. This timely seminar will utilize cases to illustrate the use of office spirometry in diagnosis and treatment of airway disease. The use of inhalation as a preferred delivery system for many medications necessitates the ability of clinicians to accurately and easily assess a patient's inspiratory capacity and overall respiratory function. The role of the primary care physician in this assessment and treatment plan implementation is crucial. This presentation will include a demonstration of the proper use of the spirometer, followed by focused cases illustrating clinical conditions and viable treatment options. Discussions also will cover the use of spirometry in deciding upon the efficacy of inhaled medications for individual patients. Register today!
February 15th deadline for Poster Abstract
Students, Family Practice Residents and Faculty Members are encouraged to present their research for this scientific poster session. The Osteopathic Clinical Research Committee will review submissions and prizes will be awarded. This year Poster Presentations will be accepted via e-mail “only” all information must be typed directly on the forms and you are required to submit the forms including your Abstract to residencyprograminfo@acofp.org.
Back to Campus
Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine hosted its third annual Senior Health Fair in November. The ACOFP Student Chapter contributed a booth that provided blood glucose and lipid screening services as well as information on healthy eating via the glycemic index and healthy fats. Over 175 people from the community were screened. Not only was it an opportunity for DMU students to help other individuals in the community prevent diabetes and high cholesterol, it was also an opportunity for the students to work on their communication and presentation skills.
