Real-Time Test for Flu and Respiratory Viruses Approved
A PCR test that quickly checks a single sample for respiratory syncytial virus and influenza A and B has been cleared for marketing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Results from the test, called the ProFlu+ Assay, are available in about 3 hours. The FDA says the fast results should help clinicians administer antiviral drugs early in respiratory illnesses, when they are most likely to be effective.
Update from Washington, DC
On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives again attempted to override the President’s veto of the “Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007”. The effort again failed to receive the two-thirds majority necessary to override the President’s veto. The SCHIP program is currently set to remain funded at 2007 levels until March 31, 2009. It is unclear what the next steps will be for the U.S. House of Representatives after multiple failed attempts to override the veto.
ACOFP’s Fit for Life

Register Today for the 2008 ACOFP Convention!
This year’s convention will feature a lecture on Tuberculosis: Scourge of the Twenty-First Century. Tuberculosis is a common and deadly infectious disease most commonly attacking the lungs but also affecting the central nervous system, the lymphatic system, the circulatory system, the genitourinary system, bones, joints, and even the skin. One third of the world's population has been exposed to the TB bacterium, and new infections occur at a rate of one per second. With the rise in HIV infections and the neglect of TB control throughout the world, drug resistant strains have emerged contributing to this growing epidemic. The purpose of this talk will be to raise the awareness of this expansion of Tuberculosis within all populations, as well as understanding and taking steps in preventing drug resistant TB found throughout the world. Register today!
