AOBFP Exam Schedule
The next AOBFP certification examination will be administered October 31-November 1, 2009, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in conjunction with the AOA/ACOFP 114th Annual Convention.

Who Should Attend
This course is designed for practicing osteopathic family physicians who want to update their skills, as well as for those preparing to take the recertification examination given by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP).

What You Will Learn
This course presents an overview of the most important topics in contemporary osteopathic family medicine, and features focused, patient-care oriented review presented by family physician faculty with expertise in specific topic areas. These reviews will help improve existing skills, as well as introduce new and innovative osteopathic modalities.

This program anticipates being approved for approximately 21.5 AOA Category 1-A CME credits, pending approval by the AOA CCME. This includes a dedicated half-day, hands-on OMT session taking place on Saturday morning, September 12. An additional 3 AOA Category 1-A CME is anticipated to be received for the Saturday afternoon Advanced OMT program, pending approval from the AOA CCME. CME hours do not apply for the daily Yoga class.

OMM Special Sessions
Saturday morning OMM Hands-On Session
Included in the registration is a dedicated half-day, hands-on seminar taught by osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) mentors to refresh osteopathic manipulative medicine skills, as well as improve reimbursement through the coding for OMM in clinical practice.

Saturday afternoon OMM Advanced Program
This advanced OMM program is designed to include OMM in the primary care setting, i.e. pregnancy, GI, and respiratory concerns as well as billing and coding issues. This program is limited in attendance and a separate registration fee applies. Three category 1-A CME credits are anticipated, pending approval from the AOA CCME.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe key aspects of current clinical information in salient family medicine topics
  • Apply outcomes/evidenced-based medicine to family practice medicine
  • Demonstrate and describe osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) skills
  • Discuss the role of OMM in family medicine
  • Describe the proper coding principles to improve reimbursement for family medicine osteopathic manipulative techniques
  • Identify specific areas of medical knowledge in need of further study in preparation for family medicine board certification or recertification

Daily Yoga Class Optional and included in registration fee CME hours do not apply.
Start the day the right way with morning Yoga classes taught by Catriona Bowman. Come for 30 minutes of stretching, toning and stress relief as Catriona guides attendees through Sun Salutations, Tibetan rites, some therapeutic moves and meditation, suitable for complete beginners, stiffies and experienced yogis.

Advanced OMT Workshop
Common Family Practice Diagnoses and the Osteopathic Approach for Treatment
Presented by David C. Mason, DO, FACOFP, Kathryn Brandt, DO and Gretta Gross, DO

Additional registration fee of $125. Attendance is limited. This lecture will outline physical findings often consistent with GERD, Asthma, Upper and Lower Respiratory Infections and Pregnancy.

Instructors will demonstrate indirect osteopathic manipulative techniques including facilitated positional release, counterstrain and balanced ligamentous tension. Coding and billing strategies will also be discussed.

 

Course Topics as of May 8, 2009 and subject to change.

Question and Answer Sessions will follow each lecture.

In the interest of going green, handouts will be provided on a USB flash drive for no additional charge. If a hard copy of the handouts in a binder is requested, there is an additional charge of $50 that will be added to the registration fee. See registration form to indicate a choice.
