Board Certification

The American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) is the examining Board of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) that administers examinations resulting in certification awarded by the AOA. AOBFP reviews and approves candidates for examination, administers and evaluates the examinations, and processes the diplomate certificate upon the awarding of that status by the AOA.

ACOFP maintains basic standards for residency training programs and provides educational opportunities and resources for its members to fulfill exam eligibility requirements. Initial certification requires the satisfactory completion of an AOA-approved family medicine residency program of three years.

For information about how to become board certified and how to register for the board exam contact AOBFP.

For information about certification verification contact AOA.

Each certifying board has jurisdiction over the examination leading to certification in particular specialties and/or subspecialties. General certification is achieved through satisfactory completion of residency training, certifying examination, and meeting of all other requirements for specialty certification.

AOBFP administers the examinations resulting in:

  • primary certification in family medicine
  • certification of added qualifications (CAQ) examinations in osteopathic geriatrics in family medicine, sports medicine, and hyperbaric medicine
  • recertification in family medicine
  • CAQ recertification in addiction medicine, osteopathic geriatrics in family medicine and sports medicine.

All physicians awarded certification in general practice are currently listed as board certified in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment if all AOA membership requirements have been satisfied.
